Heavy rain lashed down on Hajj pilgrims from around the world yesterday. Participants hurled pebbles at a giant wall in a symbolic stoning of the devil from a three-storey bridge erected to ease congestion after stampedes in previous years. Saudi authorities redesigned the area, known as Jamarat, after stampedes in 2004 and 2006 killed hundreds of pilgrims. The government has spent billions of dollars upgrading and expanding hajj infrastructure as well as crowd control technology to avoid such incidents.
