Kenyan police in the western city of Kisumu fired test gas and bullets in the air to disperse young men who broke into a hotel and beat up women who were attending an election meeting allegedly to see how to encourage peaceful voting. The young men however believed the women were meeting to plan the renting of voter identification cards, a rigging tactic cited by the opposition. Kenya Supreme Court has ordered the re-run of the August 8 election – to be held on October 17.
