The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is to receive the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize in Stockholm in recognition of its work to draw attention to the humanitarian consequences of using nuclear weapons in war. ICAN will be joined  by Setsuko Thurlow, a survivor of the U.S. nuclear attack in Hiroshima in August 1945, when they accept the award. In a statement the Nobel Peace Prize Committee said on announcing ICAN’s win in October that it wanted to bolster the case of nuclear disarmament amid international tensions.
