Senegal is set to open its new airport today jn Dias, about 45 kilometres from the country’s third largest city, Thies, in a bid to attract more investment and tourism. The Blaise Diagne International Airport is due to start operations at midday today and replaces the old Senghor Airport, in the heart of Dakar. Senghor’s expansion plans are hampered by a tightly encircled city of more than 15 million people. At a cost of more than 575 million euros, the airport took ten years to complete.
