Foreign observer missions to Liberia’s presidential elections have given the first round of elections the ‘thumbs up’ saying the election was broadly free and fair, with former football star George Weah taking the lead in most counties. LIBERIA, Africa’s oldest modern republic, was founded by freed American slaves in 1847 but its last democratic transfer of power occurred in 1944. However, three political parties that fielded candidates have alleged fraud and vowed to contest the results.
