President Jacob Zuma has reshuffled his cabinet once again. Outspoken critic of the president and SACP leader has been fired as minister of higher education, he has been replaced by Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize. There are also changes to the Home Affairs, Communications, State Security and Energy departments.

 

At the same time, political parties have reacted to the latest cabinet reshuffle with both the EFF and SACP holding press conferences today. Responding to the axing of Nzimande, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said, "It's a pity he's been removed because he has done well in education". He added that the NEC was informed about the Cabinet reshuffle, but not consulted.Mantashe says the removal of Nzimande will impact negatively on the alliance between the ANC and the SACP. The SACP has said Zuma’s recall of Nzimande is an open declaration of war on the alliance.
