The city of Cape Town says it has demolished over 50,000 illegal structures in just over a month as land invasions increased during the Covid-19 lockdown. Land invaders insist they have been forced to take the land as they have nowhere else to live and need the space for their safety and dignity. In August the United Nations Development Program released findings from their Socio Economic Impact Assessment that show that the effects of Covid-19 are expected to increase poverty and inequality in South Africa.
